For most foreign-owned Brazilian subsidiaries, the practical corporate-income-tax comparison is Lucro Real versus Lucro Presumido, subject to eligibility and activity. Simples Nacional is generally unavailable when the company has a shareholder domiciled abroad. Model both economics and compliance before choosing.
Check eligibility first
Legal form, activity, revenue and ownership can constrain the available regime. Foreign ownership is particularly relevant to Simples Nacional eligibility.
Compare the economic base
Lucro Presumido taxes a statutory presumed base by activity; Lucro Real starts from accounting profit adjusted under tax rules. The lower headline burden in one scenario can reverse when margins, losses, credits or financial results change.
Compare compliance, not only tax
Finance capability, accounting quality, intercompany transactions, documentation and close discipline matter. A regime that is theoretically efficient but operationally weak can create greater risk.
Re-model before the year closes
The decision should be refreshed with the actual revenue mix, margin, reform transition and group transactions—not inherited indefinitely from an incorporation checklist.
